The Children and staff of Bournville Primary School will be honoured at a special presentation on 24th October where they will be presented with their award by the Mayor of Weston Super Mare.
The school has designed it’s grounds so that children can learn about plants and scientific concepts as well as make friends and enjoy fresh air and exercise. Judy Holden from Bournville Primary School said: “Through our green journey we have made connections with the local community allotments and the Chocolate Garden where we have been able to participate in some of their projects. The school take green issues very seriously; we make our own compost using water saving beds and recycled wood”
With the help of XTND, a charity who support the local community in Weston, Parents and pupils of the School started work on an allotment site at the school in January this year. Since then they have transformed the area into a fully functioning allotment – producing potatoes, beans, onions and courgettes, the children are now able to learn and appreciate the concepts of growing, picking, cooking and eating fruit grown on site. Lynn Winter who is the Development Manager at XTND said: “Although the day was cold and we got covered in mud, the children, staff from Waitrose and the local community really pulled together to create a wonderful working allotment and orchard – well done to all involved – the award for the whole school is very much deserved”
